University of Tehran Innovation District: Sustainable, Green, and Smart Life for Tehran and Iran

The University of Tehran Innovation District is set to open on the 10th of Khordad. Dr. Ali Asadi, the head of the Science and Technology Park of the University of Tehran, announced the opening of the district in a press conference.

Emphasizing the University of Tehran’s motto as a scientific jihad for the realization of an entrepreneurial university with a focus on social responsibility, Dr. Asadi stated that the Science and Technology Park of the University of Tehran has undertaken activities in line with social responsibility, including the establishment of the innovation district.

He further added that the Tehran Innovation District will officially begin its activities through collaboration and the signing of a four-party memorandum between the University of Tehran, the Presidential Deputy for Science, Technology, and Innovation, the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, and the Municipality.

The primary focus of the Tehran Innovation District will be on sustainable, green, and smart living.

Dr. Asadi highlighted that intelligence entails transforming a city into a smart entity across various domains such as governance, production, transportation, and healthcare, while green living encompasses the utilization of renewable energies, waste management, water management, and more.

The concept of innovation districts is based on geographical region-based innovation ecosystems designed to attract entrepreneurial individuals, talented professionals, knowledge-based businesses, and investors. These regions lead to the transformation of science into wealth, economic development, and sustainable prosperity for society.

Dr. Asadi elaborated on the characteristics of innovation districts, emphasizing their integration into urban fabric and alignment with urban culture. He also described assets such as networks, economy, and infrastructure as integral components of these districts.

Moreover, he discussed the role of innovation district management, stating that while it has a participatory nature, it does not negate the need for a specific managing body to oversee the overall management of the district. He emphasized that municipal authorities are responsible for urban district management, while ecosystem players such as talents, entrepreneurs, and start-ups play a crucial role.

Dr. Asadi also addressed the goals of the Tehran Innovation District, which include strengthening the technology and innovation ecosystem in Tehran, becoming a hub for global innovation, technological development, and economic growth in the region, and fostering specialized scientific and technological clusters in various sectors within the district.

Furthermore, he mentioned the facilitation and support provided by the Deputy of Science, Ministry of Science, for start-ups and new ideas within the innovation district, aiming to expand support to resident knowledge-based companies in the Science and Technology Park.

The Tehran Innovation District covers an area of 750 hectares, with its geographical boundaries stretching from Shahid Hakkim Expressway in the north to Shahid Chamran Expressway in the west, Shahid Gomnam Expressway and Mofatteh Street in the south, and Shahid Madani Expressway in the east. Additionally, the district includes the City of Knowledge Innovation District, covering 50 hectares, from Keshavarz Boulevard in the north to Enghelab Street in the south, and from Karagar North Street in the west to Vassal Shirazi Street in the east.
